IBM Corp. unveiled Monday its Bluefin open-source standard interface for the codenamed “Shark” IBM Enterprise Storage Server.
The Bluefin interface is targeted to heterogeneous storage systems management, the Armonk, N.Y. company said.
Specifically, IBM unveiled its TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server Application Programming Interface (ESS API), which is Bluefin compatible.
The Bluefin, or Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMIS), is based on the Distributed Management Task Force Common Information Model and Web Based Enterprise Management technology. With SMIS, IBM said customers and vendors can develop applications to a single standard.
The initial release of the ESS API is available for the AIX, Linux, and Windows 2000 operating environments and supports routine LUN management activities. IBM noted it is also expanding storage support for mainframe customers running the open Linux platform, which according to IBM is one of the fastest growing customer segments.
The expanded Linux support for eServer zSeries and S/390 mainframe users includes disaster recovery and open systems advanced copy capabilities.
