With the technology industry expected to continue its soaring growth throughout the next decade, nearly half of Canadian lawyers polled in a survey believe intellectual property will be the hottest practice area in law over the next 10 years, a survey reported Thursday.
A survey developed by The Affiliates – a staffing service specializing in lawyers, law clerks and legal support personnel – reported that 48 per cent of 100 Canadian lawyers picked intellectual property as the field of choice when responding to the question: “what do you expect will be the hottest practice area over the next ten years?”
The Affiliates said the intellectual property field received three times the response of the next choice, corporate transactional law. The survey was conducted by an independent research firm and includes responses from 100 lawyers among Canada’s 500 largest law firms, The Affiliates said.
Sheron Hindley-Smith, regional manager of The Affiliates, said that the evolution of technology together with issues such as patents and licensing litigation would continue to drive casework among law firms and corporate legal departments this decade.
