Help desk tops IT’s hottest jobs

IT professionals working on company help desks experienced the strongest growth in the job market, according to a Robert Half Technology report released on Thursday.

According to the semi-annual study, entitled Robert Half Technology Hot Jobs Report, 18 per cent of surveyed Canadian chief information officers (CIOs) chose help desk/end-user support as the most sought-after job category.

The IT consulting service company’s report tracked the job growth of IT professionals through a survey of more than 270 CIOs across the country. A random sample of Canadian companies with 100 or more employees was contacted.

The help desk/end-user support job category rose four per since the firm’s last report. Desktop support analyst, technical administrator and computer technician – positions in the help desk/end-user support category – were job titles most sought-after in the IT industry, the report found.

“Many companies are better utilizing help desks and call centres to assist in managing relationships with internal and external customers,” said Stephen Mill, regional manager for Robert Half Technology, in a statement.

The second strongest growth was in the networking speciality area with 17 per cent, and applications development rounded out the top three with 16 per cent.

Networking professionals – specifically administrators – security analysts and engineers continue to be in demand as companies look to improve their existing platforms, the report said.

“Given recent world events, many firms are choosing to allocate IT resources towards improved security measures,” Mill said. “This process typically involves the installation of new software and hardware components such as firewalls, hubs and routers.”
