Hackers presumably linked to the infamous Anonymous group have created a dump site of information stolen from several major companies, including VMware and Symantec.
Tal Beery, an Imperva security analust quoted in this PC World article, said this site showed, with a “high degree of confidence, that the attackers were able to penetrate to an internal database of Symantec.” The information published includes e-mail addresses, passwords and even phone numbers of Symantec employees, he added.
The hackers claimed to have compromised the security of other organizations as well, including Hyundai and PayPal, though the latter denied there is any evidence that customer information was at risk.
There is speculation that the timing of the hacking “spree” was timed to coincide with Guy Fawkes Day, a holiday in the United Kingdom that some hackers associate with revolution and anarchy.
