Government budgets for information technology spending are stabilizing putting chief information officers (CIOs) in the sector in a better position to deliver and manage IT services more efficiently, according to a recent survey by research firm Gartner Research.
No less than 75 per cent of the respondents said their budgets remained the same or are increasing in 2013.
“These CIOs are now poised to boost the business value of IT by radically restructuring their services portfolio to drive innovation and improve the performance of government, said Rick Howard, Gartner research director.

CIOs in the government sector also said that reducing overall business costs has become more critical that reducing IT cost. This allows government CIOs accelerate enterprise-scale projects, Gartner said.
The government IT budget outlook is also brighter compared to other sectors although according to the research firm although Gartner’s CEO and Senior Executive Survey 2013 the private-sector is also going to boost investments in cloud, e-commerce, mobile, and social media technologies.
The top three tech priorities in the government sector for 2012 are: business intelligence and analytics; legacy modernization; and IT management.
