Dell, Samsung ink $16-billion alliance

Dell Computer Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. announced Wednesday that they have entered into a $16 billion hardware and research and development alliance.

Under the agreement, Samsung will supply memory components, LCDs (liquid crystal displays), monitors and optical disk drives to Dell for use in the manufacture of its line of computer systems, the companies said in a joint statement. The two companies will also collaborate on research and development efforts.

Dell and Samsung have collaborated on projects in the past. In October 1999, Dell expanded its relationship with Samsung to ensure long-term supply of LCD panels used in notebook computers and flat-panel monitors.
