The Montreal-based Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital is turning to data warehousing in an effort to further enhance its patient care.
Data marts will enable staff at the 637-bed facility to review administrative and clinical results by department or patient type, helping hospital decision-makers develop an understanding of the underlying reasons for particular administrative and clinical outcomes. In turn, this is expected to allow the hospital to devise proactive programs aimed at improving efficiency and patient care.
In order to provide clinical and administrative managers with the tools needed to make decisions regarding the use of the hospital’s human, financial and material resources, the facility chose Oracle Corporation’s Internet Platform and Data Mart Suite.
The Jewish General Hospital was seeking a flexible, scaleable system that could sustain its development while complementing its multiple, isolated and aging applications for easy access to integrated information. It required a computing architecture that would enable its 3,400 staff and more than 400 doctors to maximize hospital resources in order to respond to the yearly needs of 20,000 hospitalized patients, 55,000 emergency visits and 320,000 outpatient visits
“Our first step was to use the Oracle Data Mart Suite to build a repository capable of storing and integrating information about clinical activities for hospital patients and ambulatory services,” said Henri Elbaz, director general of the Jewish General Hospital. “By better understanding clinical operations, we can more effectively direct our human and material resources toward patient care.”
“It will also store major performance indicators, which will help us better manage human, financial and material resources. By better understanding clinical operations, we can more effectively direct our human and material resources toward patient care.
Elbaz’s sentiments were echoed by Ren’ Gigu’re, Oracle Corporation’s regional vice-president.
“By automating routine tasks, health-care workers at the Jewish General Hospital can spend more time caring for patients, rather than filing papers,” said Gigu’re.
The Data Mart Suite stores critical information in one location and allows authorized users access from a generic Web browser. The Jewish General Hospital will also use Oracle Express, Oracle Express Server and Oracle WebDB to develop decision-support systems enabling real-time access to management information.
“With the Oracle computing architecture, we will be able to quickly develop on-line analytical processing to meet the needs of al our varied work processes,” said Elbaz. “Oracle Discover and Express give us Web-enabled decision-making tools that are becoming essential for all our managers and health-care workers – particularly those whose work spans multiple departments or institutions,” said Elbaz.
Jewish General Hospital is affiliated with McGill University as a teching hospital, and serves patients from across Quebec and beyond.
