Compaq Computer Corp. has revamped its Deskpro EN PC line. The Deskpro EN line of corporate PCs will now feature Intel Corp.’s 815E chipset – the chips that surround the main processor in a PC. A majority of current Deskpro EN machines currently run Intel’s BX chipset. It supports three DIMM (Dual inline memory module) slots and SDRAM (synchronous dynamic access memory). Most PCs in this line will run on Pentium III processors at speeds ranging from 667MHz to 933MHz. Others will run on 600MHz Celeron processors. These three models, now available, make up the Deskpro EN series: Slim Desktop, Small Form Factor and Convertible Minitower. Pricing for a preconfigured Slim Desktop with a 600MHz Celeron processor, 10G-byte hard drive, 64M bytes of RAM and Windows 95 or 98, excluding a monitor, starts at US$875. Small Form Factor now comes with a full-sized drive bay and an extra PCI (Peripherial Component Interface) slot. Slim Desktop is 20 per cent smaller than its predecessor and features five bays – two more than the current model – PCI slots and one AGP (Accelerated Graphics Portal) slot, Compaq said. Users of the Convertible Minitower can configure it as either a minitower or desktop. Its predecessor only allowed for the minitower configuration. A preconfigured Convertible Minitower with Pentium III 866MHz processor, 128M bytes of RAM, 20G byte hard drive, a 48x CD ROM drive and Windows NT or Windows 2000, excluding a monitor, has a list price of about US$2,000, said Compaq.
