Cisco Systems Inc. has made improvements to bestselling Catalyst 2900 line of Ethernet switches by introducing a new stackable product that doubles the central processing unit performance and energy efficiency of its three-year-old Catalyst 2960-S/SF switch.

Cisco said the pre-port power consumption of the 2960-X is only 0.9 watts while that of the older 2960-S/SF is two watts. The switch has two kinds of “hibernation” modes: downlink mode, which powers down less active links; and switch mode, which powers down the switch itself.
It can be stacked with existing 2960-S/SF switches and it supports Power over Ethernet (PoE) and PoE+, according to Cisco. It is compatible onePK, Cisco’s API toolkit for software defined network programmability.
The 2960-X will be available next month with the 24-port configuration selling for $1,895 and the 48-port configuration priced at $3,395.
