Allstream has added a second point of presence in Chicago to expand its IP network access into the U.S.
The business division of Manitoba Telecom Services (MTS), Allstream said the new POP will provide access to more than 40 U.S. and international carriers and physical connection points.
The division – which is awaiting Canadian government approval to be bought by Accelero Capital Holdings — also has connection points in New York City, Buffalo and Seattle.
“We are always looking for ways to meet the growing needs of U.S. and international carriers who support companies that are extending their reach across Canada, as well as those Canadian carriers whose enterprise customers want to reach more of the U.S.,” Edith Cloutier, Allstream’s vice-president of sales, said in a statement. “This new site will also provide faster installation times for Allstream’s customers who need connection points in this corridor.”

The new facility will be located on Cemak Street and will offer redundant switched Ethernet and wavelength services. Allstream said the facility has connections near cable landing, fibre paths, exchanges and media hubs that will give its customers improved network access and security.
In May MTS announced it has struck a deal selling Allstream to Accelero for $520 million plus debt. Accelero is backed by Naguib Sawiris, the Egyptian-based telecommunications entrepreneur whose Orascom Telecom Holdings was the major financier of Wind Mobile when it began in 2008. Sawiris eventually sold Orascom to Amsterdam-based international telecom provider VimpelCom Ltd. VimpleCom is in a partnership with Wind chairman and CEO Anthony Lacavera,
Lacavera has talked about buying control of Wind with Sawiris. However, there are reports that U.S. carrier Verizon Communications has made an offer to buy Wind.
