Acer Inc. has announced that its new server the Altos SA50 is in production now and will be shipped soon. The SA50 is a Linux-based server appliance powered by Intel Corp.’s Pentium III processors and is aimed primarily at small and medium-sized businesses. The basic configuration has 64M bytes of main memory and a 10G-byte hard drive. For an even lower-cost configuration, it also supports Intel’s entry-level Celeron processors. Running the Linux operating system from Red Hat Inc., integrated into flash read-only memory, the SA50 also comes bundled with the Apache Web server and Web-based system administration software for an easy-to-use interface for network management. It is housed in a small form-factor casing and features two integrated 10/100M bits per second Ethernet controllers. The SA50 will carry a retail price of US$899.
