The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) issued a warning today that a phishing e-mail has been sent out in their name to financial institutions and consumers.
The fraudulent e-mail says that the FCAC is looking into a complaint against their institution; it prompts the recipient to click on a link within the e-mail to view the complaint.
The FCAC has confirmed that these e-mails are not from them (and that they themselves would never use this method to contact financial institutions or consumers as part of a complaints process).
Recipients are advised to delete the e-mail immediately, and refrain from clicking on the link or visiting any of the Web sites listed therein. They can report the e-mails to Phonebusters, the Ontario Provincial Police and the RCMP’s anti-fraud call centre, at 1-888-495-8501 (toll free), www.phonebusters.com, or info@phonebusters.com.
To contact the FCAC itself, go to www.fcac.gc.ca or telephone the agency’s Consumer Contact Centre at 1-866-461-FCAC (3222).
