In a move to keep up with the hot systems management market, Dell used Oracle OpenWorld today to announce the newest iteration of its systems management solution, OpenManage 5.3, which will be available next week.
The product aids in controlling data center systems and virtual environments, and has been designed with reduced complexity and better IT management functionality in mind. The number of Dell server deployment and update tools is reduced from three to one, giving a better all-around view while decluttering the toolbox.
The product also targets the hot-button issue of overheated and power-hungry data centres, including standards-based power and virtual machine monitoring, and alert capabilities.
Also included are in-line hard drive firmware update ability, and a script generator and custom update policy capabilities.
Other IT giants continue to invest in the market. The upcoming Windows Server 2008 also has power monitoring capabilities, while IBM continues to release numerous products (such as Tivoli Network Manager IP Entry Edition, Tivoli Consul Insight Manager, IT Lifecycle Management and Governance Services for Tivoli, and IBM Tivoli Security Operations Manager 1.4) under its broad system management suite, Tivoli. HP is also bulking up its data centre management portfolio with the recent acquisition of data center automation company Opsware.
