When you think of Saskatchewan, high tech isn’t the first thing that leaps to mind. So you may be surprised to hear that the province recently unveiled the country’s largest outdoor wireless network to the public. Called Saskatchewan! Connected, the network is the first deployment of its kind in North America to be supported on a provincial or state level.
Saskatchewan! Connected provides free Internet access across the province’s four largest cities: Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert. The initiative was developed by the Government of Saskatchewan Information Technology Office, which partnered with communications firm Cisco in direct response to ideas presented by Saskatchewan youth, citing connectivity and increased accessibility to technology as crucial elements to their lives.
The provincial government deployed the network to help invigorate Saskatchewan’s cities and make them among the best possible places in which people can live a “connected life.” 072370
