Oracle Corp. Wednesday released Version 4.5 of BerkeleyDB, the embedable database it acquired in February through the purchase of SleepyCat Software Inc.
New features in BerkeleyDB 4.5 include multiversion concurrency control for databases often accessed by many users at once, the ability to install upgrades and patches in replicated BerkeleyDB environments without taking the database off-line and a prebuilt replication environment for easier deployment of high-availability systems, according to Rex Wang, Oracle’s vice-president of embedded systems.
The 4.4 update to BerkeleyDB, which can be used for free or with commercial support provided by Oracle, was released about a year ago. The database has been deployed more than 200 million times, including in the Linux and BSD Unix operating systems, the Apache Web server, OpenLDAP directory and OpenOffice productivity suite.
The database did take a blow recently when MySQL AB, the maker of the popular open-source database of the same name, quietly dropped support for BerkeleyDB in August.
According to a posting on its Web site last month, MySQL will no longer allow BerkeleyDB to serve as one of its storage engines.
