According to Perforce Software and the Open-Source Initiative’s (OSI) annual State of Open-Source Report, there is an increase in open-source usage, but approximately 40 per cent of teams using open source lack the internal skills to test, use, or integrate that software.
The report details open-source software usage, adoption, and challenges based on anonymous survey responses from open-source users working in 20+ industries for organizations of all sizes across all eight global regions.
The result of the survey indicates a positive trend toward open-source strategy and maturity. This is due to the fact that 35 per cent of survey respondents have OSS security and compliance policies; 28 per cent have legal teams familiar with open-source licensing; and more than 25 per cent of organizations in most industries generate a Software Bill of Materials (SBOM), a critical first step toward greater security and transparency.
The Report also sheds light on the factors driving open-source software adoption, the most popular open-source technologies, and the most common challenges that teams using OSS face. The report also provides important insights into the increasing maturity of open-source strategies across organizations of all sizes, industries, and geographic regions.
According to the report, over the last year, 80 per cent of organizations increased their use of open-source software. OSS is used by four out of every five businesses for a variety of business-critical applications such as data and database management, containers and container orchestration, and DevOps and SDLC tooling.
