It’s known as the biggest hotbed of technology startups in Canada, but now Waterloo’s local government is seeking someone to lead its own IT strategy on Jobs.ITWorldCanada.com.
The Regional Municipality of Waterloo posted the position of director, information technology services, who will lead “development of short and long term technology plans and strategies for maintaining high customer service levels as well as providing for future service innovation and expansion,” according to the listing. The successful candidate will also spearhead the transformation of the IT Services division into a strategic resource, the employer added. The job requires a bachelor’s degree in business, computer science or a related field and the ability to develop, motivate and support staff. Waterloo’s IT environment includes 2000 work stations, server and desktop virtualization, a metropolitan area network with voice and data serving over 40 locations, and Oracle data base and applications.
The Byng Group, a full-service interior renovations and small projects firm based in Vaughn, Ont., is looking for a network administrator. The successful candidate will maintain, troubleshoot and administer its LAN, WAN, mainframe and other equipment. The job pays $38,000 to $42,000 and would involve 40 hours a week. Apart from knowledge of Windows, networking hardware and so on, no specific certifications were listed. The Byng Group said the job also involves problem-solving services to network users, implementing network traffic and security monitoring software, and optimizing server performance.
Recruiting firm Cybercoders.com is looking for an embedded software engineer who will work on audio development for DSP processors for products based on Google’s Android platform. The job is based in Vancouver and the employer is described as “a profitable and growing digital technology company.” Key technical requirements include C/C++/Assembly experience, the ability to optimize algorithms, and experience with TI and ARM processors. The salary is $90,000 to $100,000.
Orbixa Management Services Inc. is advertising for an application architect, to be based in Toronto. The company, which works with companies trading on the stock market in over two hundred trading offices in over 40 countries, wants someone with five years’ experience to research, evaluate and synthesize technical information to design, develop and test computer-based systems. The RISC-based environment runs on Linux and Solaris and requires knowledge of C++, Java, Java Script, Perl, Visual Basic, VB Script, and Visual C++/MFC. Orbixa will pay $76,000 a year.
Experienced Web designers may be interested in working at the Canadian Photonics Centre, which is seeking someone to create and optimize content for its Web site using a variety of graphics, database, animation and other software. Application skills include Adobe Acrobat Reader, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw, Flash. Although the salary was not listed, the employer added a daily car pool from Brandon, Ont. was available.
