Google is expanding its presence in the Waterloo, Ont., region as it prepares to move into a new office and is planning to hire for positions in product management, user experience, and software engineering.
The new location at the Lang Tannery district in downtown Kitchener, Ont., amounts to two floors of office space. The building, across the street from the University of Waterloo, also aligns with Google’s green initiatives.
Being part of a creative IT community is a great place for Google’s Canadian operations, said Steven Woods, engineering director for Google Waterloo. “The Kitchener-Waterloo downtown area is going through a huge revitalization,” said Woods.
The Mountain View, Calif.-based vendor first began establishing a foothold in Canada with the 2005 acquisition of Reqwireless Inc., a Waterloo-based startup that develops mobile data and browsing technology.
In 2007, Google expanded its presence with the construction of two new buildings, a space of 9,000 square feet, in the University of Waterloo’s Research and Technology Park, otherwise known as Tech Town.
