Happy Canada Day to listeners in this country. Thanks for listening on our national holiday.
Time to take stock of what a great nation this is, and how you help make it cyber secure.
After all, you live in a country with a national privacy and data protection law that applies to many companies. Many provinces follow it as well.
You are careful with your personal information, and don’t give out things like credit card numbers, social insurance numbers and the like to strangers who phone you.
You’re careful to use strong passwords for logging into your computer, email, bank and other important web sites. You use a password manager to keep track of your passwords. You enable two-factor authentication when you can — and if you don’t understand two-factor authentication when I talk about it, you look it up.
You don’t take for granted who emails you, because criminals can hack your relatives and friends accounts and pretend to be them.
You think carefully before clicking on links in email.
When you’re shopping online you’re careful about deals that are too good to be true — because the odds are they’re fake.
And when companies ask for personal information or your email, you ask why and what it will be used for.
Congratulations. Now, hopefully it’s sunny all day where you are, wave the flag, and sing “O Canada” with pride.
