Google names Schmidt CEO
Search engine company Google Inc. officially named Eric Schmidt CEO earlier this month. Schmidt, formerly CEO of Novell Inc., was appointed chairman of Google’s board of directors in March after having made investments in the company. Schmidt is known for his strengths in technology. During his tenure at Novell, the company announced NetWare 5.1, ZENworks, iChain and Novell Portal Services. Schmidt also was instrumental in spinning out Volera Inc., the company’s division responsible for caching and content delivery. As CEO of Google, Schmidt will be tasked with growth and expansion, said Larry Page, a founder of Google. Google is one of the most popular search engines, trailing only Yahoo Inc., which uses some Google technology. Google gained its popularity because it doesn’t accept display or banner advertising on its site, instead choosing to display discrete ads tied to a user’s search preferences. Schmidt will take over for Page, who will become president of products. Google’s other co-founder, Sergey Brin, was named president of technology.
