Dell Computer Corp. announced last week it would begin offering pre-tuned and tested Oracle Corp. software for Dell servers as part of Oracle’s Certified Configurations program.
The news is timed with Oracle’s OpenWorld 2001 trade show in San Francisco.
The off-the-shelf Dell/Oracle bundles will help customers interested in using Oracle’s enterprise software to quickly deploy the Oracle tools using Dell’s hardware platform, according to Dell representatives.
Two configurations are offered from Dell, one for the database and one for the application server layer of the network. Dell designs and sells its servers based on three-tier network architecture, basically defined as the database layer, the application server layer, and the front-end Web-server layer.
For the database, Dell will offer an Oracle9i Database Certified Configuration running on Dell’s PowerEdge 6400 server.
For the application layer, Dell will offer Oracle9i Real Application Clusters Certified Configuration running on Dell’s PowerEdge 6450 server, with support for Dell/EMC Fibre Channel switches and Dell PowerConnect 5012 gigabit Ethernet switches. The company’s Dell/EMC FC4700 midrange storage system will be offered as storage support for the software/hardware configurations.
Bundled software and hardware products like the Dell/Oracle certified configurations have become a popular way for hardware vendors like Dell, Compaq, IBM, and others to help customers rapidly install complex network systems.
Available in January, Oracle Certified Configurations for Dell are available for Microsoft and Linux operating system environments, according to Dell.
