Zhone acquires Nortel’s net access products

Zhone Technologies Inc. announced Tuesday it has acquired a collection of network access products from Nortel Networks Corp.

The acquired products include Nortel’s AccessNode, Universal Edge 9000 Digital Loop Carrier, and Universal Edge 9000 Remote Access, according to Zhone officials. These products are designed for use by telecommunication carriers to extend existing networks. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The market for next-generation digital loop carrier products will grow to US$3.3 billion in 2004, according to telecommunication research company RHK Inc.

In addition to acquiring the Nortel products, Zhone also announced that it would provide technical support for existing AccessNode and Universal Edge customers.

Zhone Technologies, based in Oakland, Calif., is a privately held company that was founded in 1999 by senior managers from Ascend Communications Inc.
