German telecommunications equipment maker Siemens AG will acquire Efficient Networks Inc., a maker of DSL (digital subscriber line) devices for customer premises, for approximately US$1.5 billion.
The companies expect the two-stage cash transaction, subject to approval by German and U.S. regulators, to close in April 2001, Dallas-based Efficient Networks said in a statement Thursday.
Efficient Networks makes modems and routers that customers use for DSL access in homes and small businesses, as well as software that carriers use to manage services. Siemens is one of the world’s largest makers of telecommunications equipment and already sells DSLAM (digital subscriber line access multiplexer) technology for service providers’ networks.
