Motorola Appoints Cox New CIO

Motorola Inc. last month named former Bell Canada International Inc. and Nortel Networks Corp. technology executive David Cox as its new CIO.

Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola said Cox will lead information technology projects such as an expansion of the company’s global enterprise resource planning system and a broadening of its e-business strategies and capabilities.

A Motorola spokeswoman said Dennis Roberson, the company’s chief technology officer, had been handling the CIO role prior to the hiring of Cox. Roberson is continuing in his chief technologist job, she added, and both executives will report to Robert Growney, Motorola’s president and chief operating officer.

Growey said in a statement that Cox’s “global perspective and diverse experience will be invaluable” to the company’s effort to strengthen its IT capabilities as a means of driving increased revenue growth.

Cox has worked for more than 30 years in technology management jobs and related positions involving logistics, supply chain management and other functions, according to Motorola. He spent five years as Brampton, Ont.-based Nortel’s CIO in the mid-90s, held a similar position at Montreal-based Bell Canada International, and was chief strategy officer at Bank of Montreal, in addition to working at IBM Corp. and other technology vendors. Cox also is a member of the Conference Board of Canada, a CIO council.
