Demand for enterprise data storage will grow at a rate of 90 per cent through 2004, according to a report from the META Group released on Friday.
The report, titled Enterprise Storage: Technology Adoption and Deployment Trends, is based on a survey of 328 senior-level IT professionals. Respondents indicated that they are turning to new approaches to manage increasing volumes of storage – 60 per cent of them will implement storage consolidation offerings to increase return on investment (ROI) and to improve utilization.
Other findings from the report indicate that recovery and back-up, which includes disaster recovery, remains the top spending priority for IT organizations. As well, the number of respondents looking at the implementation of network-attached storage (NAS) is expected to stay flat through 2004. The use of dedicated storage servers or the use of individual tape is anticipated to see a slowdown, while interest in storage attached networks (SANs) is growing.
Sean Derrington, a META Group analyst and co-author of the report, noted that when enterprises are attempting to deal with storage, it is important that they first attempt to identify the problems they are trying to address.
