Commerce One Inc. has partnered with Compaq Computer Corp. to bundle its e-procurement solutions with Compaq ProLiant servers in a deal aimed at drawing small and mid-market customers of Commerce One marketplaces.
The new Procurement Express solution, announced Tuesday, will provide a pre-packaged, low-cost solution that can provide a rapid return on investment and scale easily to meet an enterprise’s growing e-commerce needs, according to company officials.
“What we’re trying to do is to take the functionality and the benefits of procurement that have been available to the Global 2000 companies … and enable tens of thousands of companies around the world to benefit from the power of e-procurement,” said Paul Sullivan, Commerce One director of global alliances.
“It offers a behind the firewall implementation to these enterprises. There are a lot of hosted offerings out there for smaller organizations but you sometimes lose the control, the customization ability and the integration to existing applications with hosted offerings,” Sullivan said.
The solution, which can be deployed in as little as 15 days, is designed to bridge the gap for small and medium-size businesses that cannot afford the expensive enterprise grade software to deploy private marketplaces but still want to leverage the costs savings from online procurement, officials said.
The solution is available immediately through Compaq Global Services and Commerce One e-marketplace partners. It includes the hardware, software, services, and content necessary for businesses to move their purchasing processes onto the Internet.
Joan Jacobs, Compaq’s director of the Commerce One alliance, said the deal should also help Commerce One marketplaces achieve rapid liquidity by serving as massive deployment onramp for the mid-market.
Once small and mid-size businesses become established using the online procurement functionality, they may opt to become suppliers themselves to the marketplaces, she added.
