The paperless municipality

The City of Terrebonne has become the first municipality in Quebec to go paperless.

Under the new plan, all documents from tax data to zoning information will be made available to municipal council members online through an intranet system. The portal will give councillors quicker access to information, free up clerks’ time and reduce paper costs.

“This initiative … will allow us to handle residents’ requests faster and more efficiently, and collaboration between council members and the municipality will be greatly enhanced,” said Jean-Marc Robitaille, the mayor of Terrebonne. “This is a necessary investment in Terrebonne’s future because we feel its potential for development is outstanding. We believe it is imperative to use new technologies to better serve our residents and thereby improve the overall quality of life in the municipality.”

All municipal documents will be available for councillors through IBM WebSphere Portal Express and network access security is provided via a PNCglobal UNI-ID device.

The City of Terrebonne is comprised of 85,000 residents and is the tenth-largest city in Quebec.
