Avaya Inc. today advised users of its Cajun switches to consider replacing them with either BlackDiamond or Summit switches, manufactured by Santa Clara, Calif.-based Extreme Networks.
Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Avaya inherited the Cajun line of Ethernet switches when it was spun off from Lucent Technologies Inc. in 2000. Lucent, which focussed on manufacturing telecommunications equipment for carriers and services providers, has since merged with French manufacturer Alcatel SA.
Avaya, which has focussed on making telecom products for the enterprise market, has been warning for a few years it would eventually stop supporting the Cajun switch lines, which includes the P333T and P334T stackable switches, with 24 and 48 10/100 ports respectively.
Extreme’s BlackDiamond switch line includes: the 6800 Series, for data centres; the 8800 Series, which targets high-performance computing applications; the 10808 Series with 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity; and the 12800R Series, with modular software.
