Sybase Inc. has appointed a former Hewlett-Packard Co. executive to lead a new business unit intended to help boost its position in the market for software used to develop and integrate enterprise applications.
Thomas Volk, most recently in charge of HP’s manufacturing industry business unit, will lead Sybase’s new Infrastructure Platform Group, reporting to Sybase Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer John Chen, Sybase said in a statement Tuesday.
The new group includes Sybase’s existing business intelligence, e-business and enterprise solutions divisions, which make products including Java development tools, data analysis programs and software for tying together existing applications. The group will provide a “combined product focus designed to enhance Sybase’s current market position among the leading enterprise infrastructure providers,” the statement said.
Like its larger rivals Oracle Corp., IBM Corp. and Microsoft Corp., Sybase has been trying hard to emphasize its non-database products as a way of broadening its revenue base and attracting new customers.
Volk was a 17-year veteran at HP. His task is to manage the new group’s operations, identify new business opportunities and develop alternative channels to complement Sybase’s direct sales force.
