Asset and security management software, service-oriented architecture and Web services management, and management software bundled on Intel servers are among the new product directions Hewlett-Packard Co. says will emerge from its OpenView division by early next year.
During a briefing with press at HP Software Forum 2004 in Montreal, OpenView software executives detailed the company’s plans for the management software, which include linking business and IT systems, integrating multiple tools and providing the overarching framework for HP’s Adaptive Enterprise strategy.
Along with the new OpenView products Business Process Insight and Route Analytics Management System, HP executives said the company in the coming year will deliver technology acquired from Novadigm and Consera to compete with products from IBM Tivoli, further develop its Management Integration Platform (built on technology from Talking Blocks), and fill technology gaps in asset and security management.
Other areas HP officials said they would investigate include executive dashboards and virtualization technology. The company did not specify if it would acquire, build or partner to fill those holes in the OpenView suite.
The company demonstrated at the show its OpenView software integrated with change and configuration management software from Novadigm and Consera. Sandeep Johri, vice-president of strategic business planning of the management software organization, explained how later this year or early next year HP will be offering the Novadigm software bundled on Intel Corp. servers as a product that could compete directly with IBM Corp’s. Intelligent Think Dynamic Orchestrator. The Tivoli software is said to enable dynamic and automatic provisioning of servers and other data center components.
HP said it can already offer those capabilities through the three-product integration (Novadigm, Consera and OpenView), but the company added it would offer a “bundled solution” for customers in the near future.
“IBM’s is a software-only solution. Our plan is to deliver the Novadigm capability on a range of our Intel-based servers,” said Todd DeLaughter, vice president and general management of HP’s management software organization.
The company also demonstrated its work on the OpenView Management Integration Platform, technology to be included as an integration foundation in other OpenView products. Mark Perreira, its chief architect, said the technology — along with OpenView Lifecycle Management for Web Services — encompasses service-oriented architecture and Web services technologies that will help HP customers enforce standards and roll out the technologies in their networks.
Also, to further its move into business process management, HP said it is partnering closely with Accenture Ltd., and to manage converged service provider and enterprise networks, HP partners with Cisco Systems Inc. and Avaya Inc.
