Security by parable

A networked computer is like the world’s worst business partner. You cannot do your work without him. Unless you give him detailed instructions to the contrary, he will believe anything he hears, trust everybody he meets and cheerfully do transactions in your name before you can prevent them. Life is a never-ending struggle of trying to prevent bad people from communicating with him. You pay guards to stand at doors you cannot lock. They have pictures of people he must never talk to or deal with, but the pictures are never up to date. Really dangerous people can get in because nobody knows who they are yet. You may never know what they did or how they did it. There are plenty of companies out there with ingenious ways to protect your partner but none are guaranteed. You are under pressure to expand the business, serving customers who will not tolerate failure.
