Longtime partners Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson and Sun Microsystems Inc. have agreed to extend their collaboration to the development of an integrated multitasking Java technology, the companies said Monday.
The multitasking technology will allow mobile phones to perform more than one application at a time, while opening the door to other new applications, such as Java-based push-mail service, the companies said in a statement made in conjunction with the 2005 JavaOne Conference, which begins Monday in San Francisco.
The multitasking technology will be based on Sun’s Connected Limited Device Configuration HotSpot Implementation.
The feature will be part of Ericsson’s next line of 3G (third-generation) mobile broadband phone platforms. It will be available to licensed manufacturers at the end of this year, according to the Swedish telecommunications equipment maker.
Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia Corp. also announced at the JavaOne Conference a new Java platform for Series 60-based smart phones.
The new Java platform will incorporate the Connected Device Configuration into the Series 60 platform, opening the door to new developer opportunities for mobile middleware, Nokia said in a statement.
