August 25, 2007 – Joe Provo of Southborough, Mass., writes: Mr. Witt is either misrepresenting the history and purpose of NANOG or the quote was poorly edited. Likely he was referring to the NSP-Sec community, which do indeed make up a portion of the NANOG attendees. NANOG meets three times a year and grew directly out of the NSF Regional Techs meeting in the early days on government-funded Internet.
While it is North American in focus there are participants, attendees, speakers, and administrative committee members from across the globe. Security is a non-trivial portion of the NANOG agenda, and folks involved across the spectrum from research to actively mitigating security issues attend. See http://www.nanog.org/ for more, including information on the next meeting in October.
