A Canadian firm is providing radio-frequency identification technology to help the world’s largest paper reel core manfufacturer to track its products at any point in the supply chain.
Ipico on Tuesday said it had been chosen by Hartsville, S.C.-based Sonoco to make RFID products for its paper tube and core customers.
Unlike typical RFID tag and reader systems that do not work in a paper manufacturer’s high moisture environment or will transmit from the core of a large paper reel, the Intellicore tag and readers will use IP-X-based Dual Frequency technology.
According to the vendor, Dual Frequency RFID will read shafted and shaftless winding equipment, track inventory in a variety of paper handling scenarios such as roll clamps and roll stands and monitor the location of clamp trucks as they move throughout the operation.
The agreement calls for Ipico and Sonoco, which operates in 35 countries and has a Canadian office in Brantford, Ont., to co-develop and commercialize the technology.
