Microsoft estimates that as many as 10 million Windows Server 2003 deployments are still active even as the company’s July 14 end of support deadline for the server OS is just a few months away.
Migrating to a new system has its challenges but organizations should balance their concern for this will the possible benefits they can obtain by moving to Windows Server 2012.
Technology writer Matthew Finnegan recently outline 10 steps to help make your migration project as success:
- Take the deadline seriously – Remember how Microsoft kept of ending the end of life deadline for Windows XP? The OS was so popular that many thought they could keep it forever. Perhaps some people will actually do, but many organizations were caught off-guard when Microsoft finally pulled the plug. Make sure you’re not one of them when Windows Server 2003 is taken off life support.Â
- Audit your Windows Sever 2003 exposure – Carry out a baseline assessment to determine what are your applications running on Windows Server 2003. Thisyou’re your IT team will be more prepared to deal with legacy apps such as line-of-business applications that may be difficult to migrate.Â
- Unplug unused apps – While you’re at it, this is probably the best time to identify and get rid of applications that are no longer in use. By doing this, you can get rid of complexity in your system. Do the same for applications used by only a small number of people. Perhaps these apps can be decommissioned as well.
