What A CIO Should Know: Spending priorities for 2012

CIOs say they’re better off now than three years ago, according to Linda Tucci of Total CIO. A Society for Information Management survey tracks an uptick in budgets, hiring and other areas. Biggest area of spending? BI software.

How the cloud has given birth to the ‘outsourced CIO’: On Data Centre Knowledge, an Intel exec suggests that small and medium-sized businesses who couldn’t afford someone to lead technology strategy have more options today. Not sure how many people would want this gig, though.

When IT departments beat up (unfairly) on vendors. Surprisingly candid story on Chuck’s blog from an EMC employee who dealt with a particularly unruly customer at one of its briefings. Some good lessons here for both sides.

Google’s CIO: Why IT as a whole must change: Terrific coverage on GigaOM of the Surge conference featuring keynoter Ben Fried and how he works to develop projects that scale effectively. Amazing opening line.

Canadian law firm CIO discusses data security challenges: On Slaw.ca, Matt Kesner at Fenwick & West LLP says there is a rise in hacking attempts and other potential threats facing those who work in the legal profession. Links to a podcast version as well.

Why Obama’s new CIO will be appointing ‘Technology Fellows’: Stephen Van Roekel hopes to bring in younger, high-quality IT professionals to the White House through a two-year graduate program. Should Treasury Board in Canada be trying the same thing?

The CIO-CMO love affair: Is it just infatuation? Eric D. Brown does a great job of aggregating what seems to be a hot topic in the blogosphere about the relationship between marketing and IT. He also raises an important “but” about where it could all lead.

Should CIOs really envy CFOs for being close to the CEO? Art van Bodegraven suggests that having the boss’s ear may sound great, but it doesn’t mean you’ll get to replace him or her when the time comes. Good points here.
